What do the colors mean?

Dark Green: HFSAA Certified Zabihah Hand-Slaughtered Halal

Light Green: Fully Halal* - All menu items are halal. However, restaurant may serve alcohol, hookah, mechanically slaughtered meat, etc.
Yellow: Partially Halal - Some but not all menu items are halal

How are you verifying the Halal status of a restaurant?

I cross-check a restaurant via Zabihah, the restaurant’s website/social media, its Yelp page, and Google Reviews. On each I go through the restaurant’s about section, menus, and comments to verify if they are halal. If possible, I also try to confirm via people I know in those cities.

I understand this isn't the most thorough of ways to check if a restaurant is halal, but since there are many different types of constraints that people have with how "halal" a place is, I am adding as many restaurants on there that satisfy general "halal-ness". I am putting it on the consumer to use their own discretion. If you find a discrepancy, please let me know.

Why do you list restaurants that serve alcohol, hookah, mechanically slaughtered meat etc?

People have different comfort levels with what they eat. Some people only eat zabihah hand-slaughtered meat, while others do not eat halal. Additionally, there are numerous restaurants that are not owned by Muslims who still sell halal to cater to Muslims.

Use your own discretion and please double check if you are concerned. If you are really concerned, then stick with HFSAA certified restaurants.

What is HFSAA?

HFSAA is the gold standard for halal certification in the United States. If a restaurant is HFSAA certified, then you will be at peace knowing you are eating the highest standard there is. Learn more here.

Why is this not an app?

The listings on the map are directly integrated into Google Maps. The Google Maps app visually shows restaurants close to you, filters restaurants by cuisine type, displays a restaurant’s description, and gives you directions. This is the advantage this tool has when compared to other resources. Not to say you shouldn’t use other apps or websites. Please do! However, if you have any ideas feel free to reach out!

Why don’t you have more cuisine types to filter on?

I am only allowed 10 layers on a Google My Maps. As a result, I kept cuisine types broad. I am working on adding restaurants’ sub-cuisine types to their descriptions.

Why doesn’t ________ restaurant have a full description?

The map is a continuous work in progress. If there is a restaurant you would like to see have a full description then please use the contact form and I will prioritize it.

Why don’t you add ________ country to the map?

This map is restricted to only USA and Canada because Google My Maps has a listings limit of 10,000. I am currently at 7,000 listings and want to keep some openings for future restaurants. If I add other regions of the world, I will undoubtedly hit the limit. By all means go ahead and make your own halal maps for your own countries!

How do I search by if a restaurant is open now?

Sadly there is no way to do this. Help me get in touch with Google Maps developers so we can add that option!

Who made this map?

Just me. The reason why I’m saying this is that I want to be transparent in that I am not directly affiliated with anyone. If you want to contact me, click here.

Why is this in dark mode?

It’s easier on your eyes and helps save a little bit of energy too.

Why doesn’t Wyoming have a Halal restaurant?

:(

Open one up and I’ll add it to the map!
